China Meheco Group Co Ltd signed an agreement with Pfizer Inc to supply the latter's COVID-19 treatment Paxlovid in the Chinese mainland in 2022, the company said Wednesday. The move marks China Meheco becoming the domestic agent of the new COVID-19 pill. Pfizer also confirmed the news on its official website and WeChat account.

The Chinese mainland on Wednesday reported 402 locally transmitted COVID-19 cases, up from 233 on Tuesday, the National Health Commission said Thursday. Of the new local infections, 165 were reported in Jilin, 66 in Shandong and Gansu respectively, 21 in Shaanxi, 19 in Tianjin, 17 in Guangdong, and 13 in Jiangsu. The rest of the cases were reported in other nine provincial-level regions, the commission said in its daily report.

More tourism and culture venues as well as hospitals in Shanghai were shut down on Thursday after the city reported five new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases with mild symptoms and 21 local asymptomatic cases. Apart from an asymptomatic case who tested positive during screening, all the other cases returned positive tests after being centrally quarantined as close contacts of previous cases, Wu Jinglei, head of the Shanghai Health Commission, told a press briefing.

Chinese manufacturer CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Co Ltd said Thursday that tests have been completed for its next generation of commercial maglev train. The train, with a designed speed of 200 km per hour, has achieved multiple tech breakthroughs such as unmanned driving and non-contact power supply, said Zhang Wenyue, deputy head of CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive's maglev research institute.
